What’s not covered?

Each provider will have different things it can or cannot include in a policy. However, there are some situations travel insurance will not cover. For example:

  • Claims which are less than the excess for that section of cover. For example, you cannot claim a £40 lost item if your baggage excess is £60
  • All our travel insurance policies include cover for cancellation of your trip. There may, however, be some exclusions. For example, you won’t be covered to cancel if you simply decide not to go

Travel insurance for Asia with pre-existing medical conditions

Living with a pre-existing condition shouldn’t stop you from visiting Asia. Declare your conditions when getting your quote and you’ll be covered for related medical emergencies. That way, unforeseen costs won’t ruin your adventure.

Many cities in Asia rank among the most polluted in the world. Air pollution in Southeast Asia gets worse during the dry season. If you have a respiratory or heart condition, you may wish to consult a medical practitioner before you travel.

Medical care can be expensive in many parts of Asia. In some countries, healthcare facilities may refuse to treat you unless you have a travel insurance policy that can cover the costs.

If you’re travelling to Asia with a pre-existing medical condition, insurance is a must. At InsureandGo, we’ll consider all medical conditions, including:

You must declare all your pre-existing medical conditions when buying your Asia travel insurance. Otherwise, you won’t be covered if you have an emergency related to your condition while away.

Frequently asked Questions on Asia Travel Insurance

Do I need travel insurance for Asia?

Yes, you need travel insurance for Asia. It’s not a mandatory entry requirement. But the UK Government states that you must have appropriate travel insurance before you head overseas. This should include cover for emergency treatment and repatriation.

While this advice applies to everyone, it is particularly important if you have a pre-existing health condition.

How much does travel insurance for Asia cost?

The cost of travel insurance for Asia will depend on several factors, including:

  • The length of your trip. Spending six months backpacking around Asia? A longer trip will typically cost more to insure than a shorter one.
  • Your chosen destinations. Asia is made up of 48 countries. Some, like Singapore, Hong Kong and China, have more expensive healthcare if the worst happens.
  • Your age. Generally, travel insurance gets more expensive as you get older.
  • Your level of desired coverage. At InsureandGo we offer four levels of cover. With Budget, Silver, Gold and Black, there’s something for everyone. Our Gold travel insurance is a Which? Best Buy.
  • Policy add-ons. Are you planning any adventurous activities on your trip to Asia? Want extra coverage for valuables, extreme sports or cruising? These require more comprehensive coverage, impacting the price.
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions. Declaring them might increase the cost slightly, but it’s crucial to get proper coverage.

These factors can vary, meaning the cost of travel insurance to Asia differs for everyone.

Does the GHIC cover medical treatment in Asia?

No, the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) does not cover medical treatment in Asia. It provides access to state healthcare in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. Within these countries, you’ll be treated as if you were a resident of the country you’re visiting.

The UK does have some reciprocal healthcare agreements outside of the EU (for example with Australia and New Zealand). But it doesn’t have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with any country in Asia.

For travel to Asia, you need travel insurance that covers emergency healthcare costs. It should also cover the cost of medical repatriation if you need to fly home. This will ensure you’re fully protected if any medical emergencies crop up during your trip.
